Keeping up with Paul Davies

May 24,2018 Lauren Zandee

After a few summers in his home province of Ontario, Paul Davies has returned once again to race at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino. The long-haul between Ontario and B.C. was tiring for Davies, hence the decision to rejoin the crew at Century Downs.

As Davies has had an extremely successful race season thus far, he has already qualified out of B.C. for the Western Regional Driving Championship. When asked about his previous experience at the 2016 Western Regional Drivers Challenge, Davies says, “It’s all about learning from other drivers in every race you compete in.”

The Western Regional Driving Championship uses a different format of competition where each driver will drive a race from each of the eight post positions. At the end of the day, points will be accumulated for the top three finishes. The top two drivers from the Western Regional Driving Championship will then advance to the National Driving Championship in Ontario.

Davies considers this format to be an asset for his current situation because, “you do know about the horses you will be driving, so [there’s a] little bit of an advantage there.”

Davies current roommate Jim Marino has also qualified for the Western Regional Driving Championship from B.C. Although Davies couldn’t dive deep into Marino’s secrets, he did comment that he has quite the snore!

As if Davies isn’t already busy enough with his own stable, training and racing, he is also getting married on December 8, 2018. This date also coincidentally falls the day after Davies’s birthday on December 7.

Century Downs wishes Davies the best of luck with the Western Regional Driving Championships on June 23 as well as his wedding in December!
