Murphy and Kaptain Take on the West

Jun 14,2018 Lauren Zandee

Meet Molly Murphy! A veterinarian student from Prince Edward Island that knows her way around the Standardbred track. Standardbred horse racing has been a part of Murphy’s life since she was a little girl.

“I was lucky enough to be born in the business with my dad and my grandfather racing,” said Murphy, "You know, you start out brushing [the horses] and picking out their feet and then one day my dad asked if I wanted to jog one! I hopped right up there and haven’t gotten off since!”

The family business also inspired Murphy to pursue a career that works with animals. Murphy is currently enrolled in the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island and just finished first year. This past spring, Murphy applied for a job opportunity with Moore Equine Veterinary Center in Calgary, Alta. as a summer student assisting the racetrack vets.

“This position was a perfect fit for me given my experience at the racetrack and my love for horses,” said Murphy.  However, she couldn’t leave behind her best bud ELM GROVE KAPTAIN, so she brought him with her to Alberta!

“When I’m in school, I still go train ELM GROVE KAPTAIN even while taking eight or nine classes a semester. A lot of people ask me how I juggle it all, but I always say if I couldn’t be out there with my horse I’d go crazy,” said Murphy.

With three more years of school before Murphy becomes Dr. Murphy she is still undecided about what her veterinarian speciality will be. “A lot of people assume I want to be a racetrack vet, but I am actually open to where I want to go. I’m interested in surgery or maybe even making prosthetics for dogs,” said Murphy.

When asked about her position as a summer student with Moore Equine Veterinary Center, Murphy had nothing but great things to say. “I am learning so much from my great mentors Dr. Jordon Cook and Dr. Erin Clarke. They have really shown me the ins and outs of racetrack medicine, which I can apply to my passion of standardbred racing,” said Murphy.

Wherever her future takes her, we are confident Murphy will be successful! Century Downs Racetrack and Casino wishes Murphy and ELM GROVE KAPTAIN the best of luck!
