Interview with Racing Secretary Tim Lawson

Tim Lawson’s involvement in the world of horse racing reaches back to early childhood, growing up in the racing community, as well as being a third generation racing professional. Lawson’s grandfather began in the racing industry in the early 1960’s and the sport has been apart of his family ever since. “I’ve been passionate about horse racing my entire life,” expressed Lawson. “I’m lucky enough to call it a career and I am proud to keep the family legacy going.”

Lawson’s career in racing began in Ontario where he grew up. In university he landed his first summer position at Woodbine Racetrack, working on the grounds crew doing maintenance.  He spoke about how it was exciting just to be within proximity of the horses and racing professionals at Woodbine and his time there truly solidified his love of the sport and gave direction to the career path he wished to pursue. Lawson went on to complete internships at Woodbine Racetrack as well as at Keeneland Racetrack down in Lexington Kentucky.

For the past two years, Lawson has been with Century Downs Racetrack and Casino and currently holds of the title of Racing Secretary. His work at Century Downs has seen exciting advancements for racing both at Century Downs as well as for the greater Alberta horse racing community. Lawson took part in the installation of Thoroughbred Racing at Century Downs, and attributes it as one of his career highlights. “Starting at the beginning of 2017, it started to sink in that this was actually happening and the dates got approved. That was one of the best moments, all the way up to the horses hitting the track for the very first race. From a personal and professional standpoint, that was a huge moment in my life.”

Lawson has also had a hand in the development of the Race Program currently being built at Century Mile Racetrack in Edmonton, which is set to open in the spring 2019. He spoke about how he believes that the installment of another racetrack underscores the conclusion that horse racing has a home here in Alberta and lends itself to the longevity of the sport within Canada.

Lawson has had an exciting horse racing career in Alberta, however he recently decided to end his tenure with Century Downs to accept a position at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto as Assistant Racing Secretary. While he will be greatly missed by his coworkers, colleagues, and the fans here at Century Downs and in greater Alberta, he will be an excellent addition to the Woodbine team and we are excited to see him continue to advance the sport of Horse Racing!
