Bucking up for Kentucky Derby

May 06,2017 Krystle Frisky

This weekend at Century Downs we will be hosting a ton of exciting events for everyone – from the avid horse racing fan, to someone who has never been to the track.

On May 6th, join us in our Off-Track Betting area to watch “America’s Greatest Race” at Churchill Downs:
The Kentucky Derby.  Traditionally, the Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May every year and is the longest continually held sporting event in America – since 1875.

Watch as 20 horses compete for the title, earn a $2 million purse and make their way one step closer to the prestigious Triple Crown. The last horse to take this title was AMERICAN PHAROAH, who won the Triple Crown in 2015.

Celebrate this day in style! Sip Mint Juleps out of your own commemorative Kentucky Derby glass for only $12. You’ll be able to find these in our Mid City lounge, where you’ll also find delicious food specials that will keep you going all day long.

While the weather looks to be on our side, step out onto the Apron to watch live horse racing, with a 1:10PM post time. Our mascot, Post-time Pete, will be coming back from his vacation and can be spotted on the Apron from 1PM to 4PM.

Between races, party on the Apron with our live DJ. Song requests are always welcome! Jam out all day long! The casino will open at 8AM on both Friday, May 5th and Saturday, May 6th. Coffee and pastries will be available to order in the  Mid City Grill.

Another event happening this weekend is Virgin Radio’s Cinco de Mayo Chihuahua Races!

Two hundred Chihuahuas will be racing down our track! Join us for this family-friendly event starting at 7PM. Chasin’ Tails will be on-site for all boarding, kenneling, daycare, training or grooming questions.

The Chihuahuas will be racing to win: A trip for two to Mexico, courtesy of Virgin Radio and Air Canada Vacations, a 9-day boarding pass, courtesy of Chasin’ Tails, and a private VIP Race Day Package. Second and third-place prizes will also be awarded.

Visit the Starting Gate food trailer for a delicious variety of Mexican-themed food, curated specially for this event. Margaritas on the rocks and Corona will also be available for purchase at the Apron bar.

This Sunday, May 7, the Alberta Standardbred Horse Association (ASHA) will be on-site with Autism Speaks for Let the Sun Shine. Autism Speaks, along with Autism Speaks Canada is the leading autism science organization.

Come visit them on the Apron for more information on what you can do to bring awareness to autism.

Lastly, join us on Monday, May 8th for evening racing with a post time of 4:10PM. Every Monday wager on our $5,000 guaranteed PICK-4!

That’s it for this weekend’s events. Check out our website, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for upcoming events and promotions at the track. Visit our YouTube channel every week to watch exclusive interviews with drivers and trainers on the backstretch!
