After 40 days of races, Century Downs Racetrack and Casino wrapped up a challenging 2020 horse racing season on Saturday, November 07 on a high note, recording its 2nd highest wagering day of the meet ($294,746 was the record handle set Jul 21, 2020).
Overall, source wagering for the season came in at $7,507,469 and we experienced a 45% bump in handle over 43 race days. In total, we hosted 445 races which were down slightly from 2019 when we hosted 490 races over 50 race days.
On the track, it was an exciting season for racing fans. Major Custard, a three-year-old gelding enjoyed a perfect season going undefeated and capping his resume off with a commanding 1:55.3 score in the $84,790 Ralph Klein Memorial on Aug 29th. Track records were set and fell in 2020 and in the case of the two-year-olds they did so in back-to-back races (Oct 03, 2020). When the dust finally settled at Century Downs, a total of 4 new track records made it into the record books in 2020!
Lighting up the track at Century Downs in 2020, Driver/trainer, Brandon Campbell also enjoyed a sensational year, recording 112 wins in 320 starts as a driver and scoring 49 wins as a trainer to sit top of the leaderboard in that category as well. Hot on his heels all season long was, last year’s Obrien award winner, driver Dave Kelly who finished up with 73 wins in 384 starts.
“Despite a trying year, we ended up having a fantastic racing season with record handles being set and broken, sometimes daily. Our average daily handle climbed up 70% over 2019. While we could only have a few of our great fans on-track for live racing, we also gained quite a following online and are pleased and grateful for that. As the ink dries on this season, we look forward to 2021 with anticipation.” – Paul Ryneveld, Managing Director – Racing.
